If you don't have the "list of windows" then there is only one entry
point, just as there is if you don't have a notification area.
I personally don't have a list of windows, I think it wastes space and
prefer to alt+tab. I don't think there is anything here that we would
change in Gossip.

Hmm, the only reason my chat window is in a different place is because
new chats are shown in new windows if there is no other chat window on
the same desktop - I don't think there is a better way to do this :/

I think this could be a cool feature, it would have to be turned off by
default due to the weird behaviour it produces to first time users - and
I personally wouldn't have a use for it, what do others think?

I would have it set to 5 minutes if I used it - depends on the user I
would think.
