This is about consistence. What does the user expect. Maybe in some
cases, it's not the perfect solution (like here), but it make the life
of the user easier, because it acts everywhere in the same kind.
Consistence is for me an important part of usability. I love and use
Gossip, even though it's lack of features, because it has a good
usability.

This doesn't mean that you must follow in every part other GNOME
applications. I guess nobody complains about the font size of the tabs.
This lack of consistence is a benifit. For example I didn't noticed,
that the font is smaller. This is ok. In other cases (like with the
close button) consistence gives you more benefit, than the efficiency of
a different solution.

I tried in my last mail, but maybe my english isn't good enough to
explain it.

I agree with the point, that you can add more tabs to a default chat
window without the close button.

The bigger window or less tabs in default window is a "price" we should
"pay" for usability and consistence. And I think the benefit for the
user is it worth.

Regards,

Keywan
