I was going to say the same thing, especially when using group chat when
I naturally make the window bigger because of the contact list addition.
The idea of saving size against JID (as in
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=141855) is a good one, but it
might be confusing to some people who will expect it to remember the
position regardless of who you talk to.
My idea was to save the size of the internal part of the chat window
(used for normal and group chat), then we could just add the contact
list width onto the window width for group chats keeping the actual
message area consistent.
