I have been thinking about using libnotify for messages when the message
window is not visible for a while. This would probably be configurable
and would not happen when you are in a busy state. Mostly I see the
scenario of being on another desktop or Gossip being minimised/not
visible and you have music so you can't hear the sound of a new message.
Having a notification would be really good here. Plus, I would like
people to use the busy state more and this would probably happen if
people knew they wouldn't get notifications and other interruptions in
this state. I want there to be obvious differences between busy and
available so users know they can easily avoid distractions by being in a
busy state.

I can't see the point in this to be honest. Why would you want to do
that?

Say you have that feature and you see a bunch of users online. Those
users that are offline may not actually be offline, so it falls into the
same category as those requests we get from users saying they want to
set their state to away while using their computer. It means your status
is not truly representative and therefore less meaningful.
