They are only shown if you are using a "non-classic" chat theme (non-irc
style).

Do you have a gnome icon theme installed?

Why not use it for all your interfaces? It's kind of against the whole
point of network manager if it doesn't get to manage all of them, in my
opinion.

We might have to add a way to bypass network manager, I suppose
