I think my main point here is that it doesn't matter if the backend
supports some of these functions or NOT, you can always have API calls
which are effective for some protocols and not others and let the
backend decide and the UI (to some extent when it comes to calling that
API).
Doing protocol specific things is ok in the UI as you said Micke if it
is only in one place, but for things like _get_example_username() it is
likely to be used in the add contact/add connect/add foo/etc places and
having that example defined in one place makes sense to me instead of in
each protocol specific UI area.
