Idea I've just seen in gajim that works quite well: Older messages are
not only slightly grayed, but in a reduced font size. Easy to
distinguish AND takes up less scrollback space.

In the event that I've manually removed messages through the clear
command though, I'd still expect the dialog to show the same
lack-of-contact between restarts.
