I think the send button is important enough to warrant this because
pressing return to send is not obvious to everyone and it's not
discoverable. (ie. there isn't even a menu item or tooltip that mentions
this)

For the smiley list though I don't think it's necessary. Perhaps it should
be left just on the menu like it is now and perhaps pop-up (unobtrusively
somehow) when the user types <space><colon> into the entry widget?
