I just tried Gajim out then.

As Brian said, the banner is a waste of space. Gossip's use of the
presence icon to also indicate typing is much, much better than Gajim's
text because it's hard to quickly distinguish what the actual typing
state is.

The stuff under the actions button I think really belongs in the menu
bar, but having an emoticon and send button is probably a good idea.
Maybe inline with the entry field, aligned with the bottom of it and
positioned at the end, so it is more obvious what they are associated
with? Eg:

  |'---------------------------------------------'|
  |.-------------------------. .------. .--------.|
  ||Hi, mum!                 | | :) V | | > Send ||
  |'-------------------------' '------' '--------'|
  \-----------------------------------------------/

  |'---------------------------------------------'|
  |.-------------------------.                    |
  ||Hi, mum! A bit more text | .------. .--------.|
  ||spills to a new line..   | | :) V | | > Send ||
  |'-------------------------' '------' '--------'|
  \-----------------------------------------------/

This kind-of sucks because you can't enter anything as wide as the full
chat window and so it may feel a bit cramped, but as messages can get
wrapped arbitrarily anyway, perhaps this would not matter too much.

I prefer Gajim's larger default chat window size, but maybe Gossip
should just remember the last size and/or position and reuse that?

Does anyone know how the "[Nickname] is paying attention to this
conversation" / "[Nickname] is doing something else" thing that Gajim
does works? I assume it is based on if the chat window has the focus?
That would be nice to see in Gossip. JEP-0085 looks really useful.
