Yes, it is a clean interface.

Actually, my mother came round my house recently and used Gossip quickly
and the first thing she said after she had typed her message was, "How
do I send it?" 

Perhaps we need a send button? I am open to comments on this. 

If I do add any buttons then I would definitely have one for the
emoticons but until then, it is also available in the right mouse click
context menu for the send GtkTextView.

I think Gajim's chat window (see attachment) is ok, but I would like to
hear more from users before I do anything here.
